Myoglobin and Mitochondria: How Does The “Oxygen Store” Work?

چکیده

The most important condition for functioning of all living aerobic organisms is continuous supply of sufficient oxygen. The access of oxygen to metabolic processes in cells is mediated by the respiratory proteins, tetrameric blood hemoglobin (Hb) and monomeric muscle myoglobin (Mb). Myoglobin is expressed in red muscles in response to mitochondrial demand for oxygen, transporting it from sarcolemma to mitochondria [1-3]. Particularly high Mb concentration is observed in muscles of aquatic mammals, who spend a long time underwater for food, and also in those of highland animals, living under deficient O2, which served as the basis for the hypothesis that myoglobin is the “oxygen store” for mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase.

Myoglobin-mediated oxygen delivery to mitochondria of isolated cardiac myocytes.

Myoglobin-mediated oxygen delivery to intracellular mitochondria is demonstrated in cardiac myocytes isolated from the hearts of mature rats. Myocytes are held at high ambient oxygen pressure, 40-340 torr (5-45 kPa); sarcoplasmic myoglobin is fully oxygenated. In this condition oxygen availability does not limit respiratory rate; myoglobin-facilitated diffusion contributes no additional oxygen ...

Role of myoglobin in the oxygen supply to red skeletal muscle.

The contribution of nyoglobin to the oxygen uptake of red skeletal muscle was estimated from the difference in oxygen uptake with and without functional myoglobin. The oxygen uptake of bundles (25 mm long, 0.5 mm mean diameter) of muscle fibers teased from pigeon breast muscle was measured in families of steady states of oxygen pressure from 0 to 250 mm Hg. The oxygen-binding function of myoglo...

A Computational Study of Oxygen Transport in the Body of Living Organism (RESEARCH NOTE)

Oxygen is an essential part of the living organism. It is transported from blood to the body tissue by the systematic circulation and large part of it is stored in the blood flowing in capillaries. In this work we discuss a mathematical model for oxygen transport in tissues. The governing equations are established assuming that the blood is flowing along a co-axial cylindrical capillary inside ...

Hypoxia induces a complex response of globin expression in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Unlike most mammals, many fish species live and survive in environments with low or changing levels of oxygen. Respiratory proteins like hemoglobin or myoglobin bind or store oxygen, thus enhancing its availability to the respiratory chain in the mitochondria. Here we investigate by means of quantitative real-time PCR the changes of hemoglobin, myoglobin, neuroglobin, cytoglobin and globin X mR...
